Serdang, 23 May – The Malaysian Research Institute on Ageing (MyAgeing®), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), recently hosted a public talk titled “The Role of Caregivers in Fall Prevention Among Older Adults: Insights, Strategies and Impact” at the MyAgeing® Training Room.
A total of 25 participants joined the event, including UPM staff, students, and members of the public.
The session featured Professor Keith Hill, a renowned expert in rehabilitation and ageing from the Rehabilitation, Ageing and Independent Living (RAIL) Research Centre, Monash University, Australia. Professor Keith shared valuable insights into the dangers of falls among older adults and highlighted the critical role caregivers play in prevention.
As people age, they face a higher risk of falling due to muscle weakness, poor balance, and declining vision, factors that can lead to serious injuries and loss of independence.
He also emphasized that caregivers are key to preventing falls by ensuring home safety, encouraging light physical activity, reviewing medications, and offering emotional support. Additionally, he pointed out that the impact of a fall extends beyond the individual, often leading to increased stress and emotional strain for caregivers.
The talk also brought attention to the well-being of older caregivers, who may be simultaneously managing their own health challenges. It emphasized the importance of rest, regular health screenings, and accessible support systems to maintain their ability to provide care effectively.
This event reflects MyAgeing®’s continued commitment to public education and community empowerment in support of healthy and active ageing.
