The Asian Forum of Parliamentarians on Population and Development's Visit to MyAgeing®, UPM

Serdang, 28 April (Monday) - The Malaysian Research Institute on Ageing (MyAgeing®), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), hosted a short visit by a delegation from the Asian Forum of Parliamentarians on Population and Development (AFPPD). Led by Y. B. Tuan Howard Lee Chuan How, the new Secretary-General of AFPPD and Member of Parliament for Ipoh Timor, the AFPPD delegation was warmly welcomed by UPM's Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research and Innovation), Y. Bhg. Professor Dr. Zamberi Sekawi.

In his welcoming remarks, Prof. Dr. Zamberi reiterated UPM’s commitment to high-impact research for sustainable development and advancing evidence-based solutions for healthy, active and productive ageing. A. P. Dr. Rahimah Ibrahim, the Director of MyAgeing®, UPM delivered a brief presentation on population ageing and aged care in Malaysia, as well as outlining the Institute's research programmes in the field of gerontology. As the Asian region grapples with the challenges and opportunities of the Care Economy, driven by rapid population ageing, changing family structures, and growing demands for formal and informal care services, the Director noted that governments will need coordinated policies, investment in care infrastructure, including support for caregivers to ensure an inclusive and sustainable economic growth for all.

Members of the AFPPD delegation took a brief tour of the Institute and concluded the visit with a group photo. About 60 parliamentarians, senior officials and representatives from 30 countries were in Malaysia for the 15th General Assembly of the AFPPD which was held in Kuala Lumpur on Sunday. Over the next five (5) years, Malaysia will host the AFPPD Secretariat as it relocates from Japan. UPM looks forward to supporting the AFPPD in addressing population and development challenges in the region, especially the Global South.
