Introduction

In accordance to the healthy and active ageing initiative by WHO, the niche research area under the Medical Gerontology Laboratory revolves around issues related to “Functionality and Ageing’, which also known as FunAge. Most of the researches are focusing on exploring and identifying the multifactorial domains associated with improved physical, mental and social functions of older persons and its relationship with better quality of life and well-being of the older persons. The research approaches not only involving community, institutionalized and hospital-based elderly population, but also role of assistive technology to improve the functions of older persons. Three research areas under this niche have been developed to guide the research scopes which are:
  • Services and facilities (accessibility to the healthcare system for older persons, etc).
  • Equipment and treatments (pharmacology and non-pharmacology aspects, genetics, nutrition and technology aspects in promoting active ageing).
  • Health promotion (physical activity, health literacy, promotion of mental health among elderly, dementia etc)

Among the researches Healthy ageing is more than just the absence of disease, but also maintaining functional ability. Though majority of older persons will eventually experience multiple health problems, older age does not imply dependence. The greatest costs to society are not the expenditures made to foster this functional ability, but the benefits that might be missed from failing to make the appropriate adaptations and investments.
