Bengkel Managing Ageing Workforce Study NIOSH

SERDANG, 21 MAY 2025 – A research initiative sponsored by the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is making significant strides in supporting the health and readiness of Malaysia’s ageing workforce, particularly within the Fire and Rescue Department of Malaysia (JBPM).

As part of the research activities, a Workshop on Instrument Refinement and Application Development for Fit-to-Work Assessment was successfully held, focusing on the development of tools to assess the functional fitness of JBPM personnel aged 45 and above. This is a crucial step in addressing the unique occupational challenges faced by ageing firefighters who continue to serve in physically demanding environments.

The research, led by Assoc. Prof. Ts. Dr. Mohd. Nazim Mokhtar with a multidisciplinary team of experts, aims to produce a reliable Fit-to-Work assessment framework tailored to the operational realities of JBPM.

The research outcomes are expected to inform future guidelines, workplace interventions, and training modules, enhancing both individual performance and institutional preparedness in managing an ageing workforce.

This project also aligns with Malaysia’s broader agenda on active ageing and workforce sustainability, showcasing the role of research and innovation in shaping safer and more inclusive work environments.
