SERDANG, May 7 — An official delegation of 21 Medical Social Work Officers visited the Malaysian Research Institute on Ageing (MyAgeing®ï¸), Universiti Putra Malaysia as part of the 2025 Medical Social Work Officers Primer Programme.

The visit aimed to provide an in-depth understanding of MyAgeing®'s contributions to research and development on ageing-related issues in Malaysia. It also served as a platform to foster strategic collaboration between professional practitioners and research institutions, aiming to strengthen interdisciplinary approaches to enhancing the well-being of older persons.

Dr. Puvaneswaran Kunasekaran, Head of the Laboratory of Social Gerontology, provided a comprehensive overview of MyAgeing®’s core functions and contributions, emphasizing its ongoing efforts to promote healthy and active ageing.

A presentation by Ms. Norisma Aiza Ismail from MyAgeing®ï¸ was a key highlight of the visit. She presented research findings on elder care issues in Malaysia, with particular emphasis on policy implications and social support. This was followed by a sharing session by Mr. Muhammad Amirul Aidil bin Rosli a member of the Counselling and Medical Social Work Section at Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Hospital (HSAAS). He discussed the psychosocial support services offered by HSAAS and highlighted the role of medical social workers in teaching hospitals.

By 2030, Malaysia is projected to become an aged nation, with 15% of its population aged 60 and above. Consequently, establishing strong synergies between research and professional practice is essential to ensure that the nation is well-equipped to address the challenges of population ageing in a sustainable, inclusive, and holistic manner.
